Directional asymmetries in place assimilation: a perceptual account

چکیده

Introduction The project presented here seeks to explain observed regularities in the direction of place assimilation. The best known among these is the fact that assimilation proceeds regressively in intervocalic clusters composed of alveolars, palato-alveolars, labials or velars. This fact is consistent with a variety of interpretations, some of which are discussed below. However the range of analyses narrows down drastically once we observe that assimilation is consistently progressive in clusters composed of retroflexes and alveolars. These two observations are schematically illustrated below. Instances of each type are presented in the body of the paper.

Phonology IX . The role of gestural overlap in perceptual place assimilation in Korean

Opposing views have emerged in phonological and phonetic theory on whether perceptual place assimilation is exclusively attributable to gestural reduction or can be triggered by gestural overlap as well. Specifically, regressive place assimilation in Korean /pk/ clusters has been used as argument for the hypothesis that gestural reduction is uniquely responsible for perceptual place assimilatio...

Perceptual Assimilation and Discrimination of Non-Native Vowel Contrasts

Research on language-specific tuning in speech perception has focused mainly on consonants, while that on non-native vowel perception has failed to address whether the same principles apply. Therefore, non-native vowel perception was investigated here in light of relevant theoretical models: the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM) and the Natural Referent Vowel (NRV) framework. American-English...

Not all sounds in assimilation environments are perceived equally: Evidence from Korean

This study tests whether potential differences in the perceptual robustness of speech sounds influence continuous-speech processes. Two phoneme-monitoring experiments examined place assimilation in Korean. In Experiment 1, Koreans monitored for targets which were either labials (/p,m/) or alveolars (/t,n/), and which were either unassimilated or assimilated to a following /k/ in two-word uttera...
